Welcome to Tales of the Odysseus Group, a shared-universe pulp adventure wiki and clearing-house for two-fisted tales of action, excitement, and improbable adventure.
To participate, the management requires that you adhere to certain basic rules. This is a shared sandbox, and it is important that, as you play here, you aren't knocking over other people's castles and spoiling the fun.
You are required to agree to the following:
1. Read first, post later.
You're not the only creative force at work here. It is expected that you will read the FAQ, the Style Guide, and understand the terms of this Acceptable Use Policy, and comply with the guidelines contained therein. It is also expected that you will read the works of others who came before you so that you understand the context in which your own creations will exist.
2. Adhere to the Permissions.
Each character, organization and so on should have a listing, right near the top, indicating one of three "permission levels". These are set by the creator to indicate how others may use these creations in their stories. While this is a shared universe, we recognize that sometimes something is your baby and you don't want people messing with it. We encourage sharing as much as you can, but feel free to mark the occasional item off-limits. The permission options are:
| Open | Anyone can use this character/organization/whatever at will, no questions asked. |
| Permission | You must seek permission from the creator of this subject before using it, but are encouraged to do so. This level is appropriate for creations where the originator wants others to play with their idea, but wishes to maintain an amount of "editorial control" to ensure that it stays within the boundaries they have in mind. |
| Closed | These subjects are the exclusive province of their creators. Referring to these is usually acceptable (checking with their creator would be polite), but utilizing them in a work or adding to them is not allowed. |
3. Don't contradict previously established material.
This one is pretty simple. If what you are writing goes against material previously written on the subject, don't do it. If Miles Thompson has been established (he has) as an Australian, don't retcon him into a Canadian. If The Steel Cross is lead by The Kommandant, don't write about its master, Grüppenführer Barney. Note that this is different from *expanding* extant material. Adding to what is established is fine (where allowed by permissions), contradicting it is another thing entirely. Note as well that any actual narratives (see Thrilling Tales!) should be considered canon, and the events detailed therein are considered "established fact", although it is acceptable to present other viewpoints of the described events.
4. Courtesy first, ego last.
We're all doing this for kicks. When in doubt, go for politeness and let disputes be resolved through civilized discussion. Always extend courtesy to the originators of material you're using, and, as the originator, always have the humility to hear out someone else's ideas.
5. Credit where credit is due.
If someone else has contributed notably in some fashion to an entry of yours, don't be a jerk: give them a mention where appropriate and a link to their contributor page.
That's all. They're simple rules, and you should be able to follow them without even having to worry about it. The Management reserves the right to revoke posting privileges of those who will not or cannot adhere to these rules.
